Ilford pubs

The worst aspects of East London and Essex collide here in an explosion of lager, anti-social behaviour and vomit.

The Valentine, 27-37 Perth Road, Gants Hill, Ilford, Essex
This beast of a pub located just off the Gants Hill roundabout is probably a bit of a culture shock for those people who did not grow up in Essex. You could be forgiven for thinking that this pub was called 'Karaoke'. The enormous pub sign is completely concealed by a banner advertising karaoke every Wednesday and even boasts regular competitions. On entering, the pub expands into a huge open area housing at least two big screens for football viewing. Although a few punters were watching Sky on this particular Saturday afternoon, the place still felt empty. Half a century ago my grandfather use to drink in here, not that he would recognise it much now. This is definitely a pub for the youngsters: posters advertising alcopops adorn the walls and the bar is dominated by the usual big name commercial beers. After the sun sets we imagine this place gets packed with the local 'yoof' getting drunk on cheap booze and getting off with anything with a pulse. If this is your idea of a fun Saturday night you'll love it here otherwise you're better off giving it a wide berth.
