NOTE:It was West London, and as usual it seemed to be full of overfed young men shouting as they roamed the streets between shite bars. As soon as I saw this pub lurking over the road from Turnham Green, I knew I was saved. A sprawling monster with a Thai restaurant stretching for miles at the back, the shabby wooden décor has defied any attempts at refurbishment since what feels like the beginning of time. To one side of the bar is a particularly impressive alcove, rather resembling a pub version of a maharaja's bedroom, containing two tables and a coal fire. Mild on tap and a really laid-back atmosphere had me almost forgetting what part of town I was in, and my mood was only slightly marred by the truly dreadful music and the Chelsea fans contaminating the beer patio like a bad strain of anthrax. It also has tables out the front should you wish to bask in the slipstream of West London's legendary traffic problems, with the roadjam of SUVs melting a hole in the ozone layer even as I watched.
